The Psychodynamic Approach

  • At the heart of the psychodynamic approach is the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client. A working alliance
may be established, which is confidential and respectful; and
which aids the development of feelings of trust and security.

  • Through this, a safe space can be created in which to work
together on issues which may be causing concern or distress.

  • The unconscious is acknowledged as having a underlying
influence in our lives. By making links between past and present
patterns of thinking, feeling and acting, particularly in the way
we relate to others, uncounscious processes and conflicts may be discovered. These can give valuable insights and increase our understanding of ourselves.

  • Sigmund Freud described dreams as the 'royal road to the
unconscious.' Exploring the meaning of dreams may be seen as a
helpful way to gain access and insight into unconscious processes,
conflicts and concerns.(Not everyone may wish to explore their
dreams in counselling, but it is something to consider.)

  • A wide range of issues can be worked on using this
psychodynamic approach. These include stress, anxiety, depression, bereavement and other forms of loss, identity, mid-life crisis,
self-esteem, lifestyle issues, relationship concerns, anger and
    trauma.

other differing theoretical approaches, on the BACP website.
